Red Faction TV Movie Coming To SyFy

Do the terms "SyFy Original Movie" and Red Faction evoke a rather dubious reaction from your gamer instincts? Well, that juxtaposition has become a reality with the announcement of a two-hour movie to air on the network, which will coincide with the March 2011 release of Red Faction: Armageddon.

However, for those of you excited for next year's RF outing, you may be interested to know that the SyFy movie, entitled Red Faction: Origins will be an important link in the game's storyline, which began in last year's Red Faction: Guerrilla. The movie will focus on Jake Mason, son of Guerrilla's protagonist Alec Mason, who carries on the good fight in the pseudo-Marxist space epic. This will be an important context-setting link to gamers with plans to jump right into Armageddon, since your protagonist in that game, will be Darius Mason, son of TV hero Jake and grandson of Alec. That's right folks, blowing s**t up and sticking it to the man has quickly become the Mason family business.

The TV movie is actually a backdoor pilot, meaning if things work out, it  could be picked-up as a regular series. Therefore, I am not going to take the knee-jerk reaction of classifying this as something on the level of other SyFy modern schlock masterpieces like Boa vs. Python. There is a respectable lineup of shows that, besides the Battlestar Galactica and Stargate franchises, reflect a reasonable expectation of the show being a worthy supplement to the storyline established in the Red Faction video games.

It's actually a very ambitious concept to directly tie-in a television series into a video game. While we've seen attempts to canonize the events of video games into the storyline of their film franchises like Vivendi's
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, this seems to be an unprecedented and serious effort to purposely distribute one particular storyline throughout different media. It's a strategy, that, if successful with Red Faction, we would undoubtedly see more of in the future.

Do the plans to bring a
Red Faction movie to your television interest you? Would you feel incomplete to play Armageddon without watching the movie?

Get A Glimpse Of The Goon

It's been a long couple of years now since we first heard that Eric Powell's great monster/mobster comic THE GOON was becoming a feature film, courtesy of producer David Fincher (FIGHT CLUB, etc.) and FX company Blur Studios. So it's nice to see the project is still slowly coming to computer-rendered life.

MTV got a quick peek at some of the footage from the movie, which features Paul Giamatti voicing Goon's sidekick Frankie. More footage will be unveiled at the Friday panel at Comic-Con -- where Giamatti and Fincher will be in attendance with Powell -- after which the full clip(s) will be online for those would can't make it to San Diego. For now, groove to the undead slapstick and mayhem below!

The Dark Horse comic revolves around a creature-punching mob enforcer and his mouthy buddy, and their misadventures in a bizarre monster-filled town.

New Trailer For 'The Town' From Director Ben Affleck

Check out the new trailer for the upcoming film, The Town, it looks great.

After his excellent directing debut Gone Baby Gone, I've been looking forward to seeing what else Ben Affleck can do behind the camera.

And his second feature The Town certainly seems more ambitious, with the Boston boy coming back to his old stomping grounds to knock over a few banks with Jeremy Renner. A killer cast, a Heat vibe and a solid trailer make this one pretty high on the watch list. The synopsis:

"Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage--bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name... and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug...not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path."

The movie is an adaptation of Chuck Hogan's book The Prince of Thieves.

Confirmed: Angelina Jolie Coming To The San Diego Comic-Con

There’s been speculation, but now I have confirmation: Angelina Jolie is heading to Comic-Con. The actress will be there on Thursday, July 22nd, to promote her latest flick, Salt.

The actress’ appearance has been speculated ever since it was known that the studio would make Salt part of their Hall H presentation. But the actress has been everywhere promoting the movie, and there’s no reason why she shouldn’t show up there to make one powerful impression on the people who eat action movies up.

Now the other question still unanswered is whether Brad Pitt will make an appearance. Pitt is part of the voice cast in DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind, and while the company has said cast members Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill and director Tom McGrath will be at the Con, Pitt’s involvement has yet to be confirmed.

Monday Morning Movie Round-Up

Easily the most anticipated non-sequel release of the summer, Inception breaks in to approximately 6,700 screens at 3,792 theaters this weekend (including a record IMAX release of 197 venues). The Christopher Nolan directed film starring Leonardo DiCaprio earned 60.4 million at the box office as well as the top overall spot. Inception has been relentlessly advertised over the past month. On television, it seems like nearly every commercial break includes an action-packed, visually-stunning spot that clearly emphasizes that the movie is from the director of The Dark Knight.

The 3D animated comedy Despicable Me came in second adding another 32.7 million to its overall total. Gru and his army of Minions may appear to be ruthless villains in constant pursuit of world domination, but that didn't stop audiences from once again showing them some serious love at the box office.

In third is Disney's The Sorcerers Apprentice. The Socerer's Apprentice only earned 17.3 million dollars in its opening week despite Disney offering a two-for-one ticket deal via fandango. The film reunites the National Treasure team of Nicolas Cage, director Jon Turtletaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for a modern-day re-imagining of the classic Fantasia segment of the same name. Mr. Cage is very hit-or-miss, and Mr. Bruckheimer is coming off Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ($89.2 million), which is one of the biggest domestic disappointments of his career.

Rounding out the top 5 are The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with 13.5 million dollars in its third week in theaters and the great Toy Story 3 with another 11.7 million, bringing the domestic total of Pixars latest and greatest to a whopping 362 million.

Kevin Bacon To Play Sebastian Shaw in 'X-Men: First Class'

When Kevin Bacon officially signed on to play the villain in X-Men: First Class, Fox did not specify which X-Men rogue the actor will portray.  Despite heavy speculation that Bacon would be perfect for Mister Sinister, Forces of Geek have a source that claims the villain in question is Sebastian Shaw.  Here’s a brief character bio courtesy of Wikipedia

A mutant, Shaw possesses the ability to absorb kinetic energy and transform it into raw strength. He is the leader of the New York branch of the Hellfire Club, an exclusive secret society bent on world domination, although to the public, he is a legitimate businessman and ordinary human.

X-Men: First Class is set to begin production next month with Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) as director.  James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Alice Eve, and Caleb Landry are official members of the cast, while Aaron Johnson, Rosamund Pike, and Lukas Till have been rumored for roles.  Fox is targeting a June 3, 2011 release date.

Wesley Snipes 3 Year Prison Sentence Upheld

Actor Wesley Snipes hopes of staying out of jail have been dashed - a federal appeals panel has upheld a three-year prison sentence on federal tax charges against him. On Friday, July 16 officials in an Atlanta, Georgia court ruled the Blade star was properly sentenced to three years in federal prison back in 2008, according to the Associated Press.

Attorneys for the action movie star argued that the sentence was "unreasonable". A jury originally convicted Snipes on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income
tax returns. The appeals court decision will be a big blow to Snipes, who previously insisted officials would overturn his jail sentence.

In March, the actor told the
Los Angeles Times newspaper, "I wouldn't say I'm worried about it (case); I'm aware of it. All things fall as they should. I'm at great peace with how I live my life and the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon me... We're gonna win this." Snipes has been free on bail pending the outcome of the appeal.

Jennifer Lawrence Cast As Mystique In 'X-Men: First Class'

Jennifer Lawrence, who's been getting rave reviews for her work in Winter's Bone, has been cast in the X-Men movie as Mystique, a role played by Rebecca Romijn in the first trilogy.

Fox has been furiously casting X-Men: First Class, which focuses on Marvel's superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation. James McAvoy will play Professor Charles Xavier, and Michael Fassbender is portraying Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto. Those roles were previously played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

Nicholas Hoult, Alice Eve and Caleb Landry Jones are among those playing mutants looking for mentor figures and teachers to guide them with their powers. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain, whose identity has not been revealed, as the studio keeps plot details under lock and key.

Mystique is a shapeshifter who can mimic other people, though she cannot replicate superpowers. In comics lore, she was revealed to be the mother of Nightcrawler.

The movie is rolling toward a late summer start in London. Matthew Vaughn will direct.

The role is a big jump in terms of exposure for Lawrence, who is generating early awards buzz for Winter's Bone, and also marks her first studio feature. The actress is about to star in The House at the End of the Street a thriller that begins production in Ottawa in August, and will then segue to England for X-Men.

The actress also appears in The Beaver, the Jodie Foster-directed movie starring Mel Gibson.

Chuck's Zachary Levi Auditioning For Superman Reboot

Zachary Levi has reportedly proposed himself to be one of the people who will resurrect Superman in an upcoming reboot project. According to GeekTyrant, the Chuck actor has joined the audition for the film which is tentatively titled The Man of Steel. While it is not known what role that he auditioned for, the site is sure that he eyes the coveted role of Clark Kent.

At the same time, GeekTyrant also gets information that Jonathan Nolan has been attached to direct the new "Superman" film. Though his role has not been officially announced yet, the brother of Christopher Nolan has been said working on pre-development stuff.

This, accordingly, debunks previous report which mentioned that Chris Columbus would serve as a helmer for "Man of Steel". If Jonathan is indeed chosen to serve behind the lens for the superhero movie, it would be his first directing gig.

Beside widely known for his portrayal of Chuck Bartowski in TV series Chuck, Zachary Levi has also landed a role in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, portraying a live-action character as Toby Sevile. Jonathan Nolan, meanwhile, has written the scripts for several movies such as Memento and The Dark Knight.

Sylvester Stallone Regrets Doing Comedies

Sylvester Stallone regrets making comedies like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot - because they ruined his career. The movie star teamed up with Golden Girls star Estelle Getty in the 1992 film and he now accepts it was a big mistake - because his fans didn't approve of him making something so silly.

Stallone tells Cigar Aficionado magazine, "The audience expects certain kinds of films out of certain actors. I made the mistake of going too far off the beaten track. John Wayne knew what his audience wanted; he never would have made Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot."

"People underestimate the relationship certain actors have with their audience. When you mock that by doing something so far off-center, they let you know. Someone once said that if you give an audience what it wants, you'll be around for a long time, and if you give them what you want, you'll wind up broke."

And, at 63, Stallone not only regrets the films he made but the films he passed on, like "Romancing the Stone", "Witness" and "Coming Home". He adds, "I would like to have done a few more dramas."

Pixar Set To Launch 'Planes'

Cars holds something of an odd place in the Pixar pantheon. A pet project of the studio’s creative big cheese John Lasseter, it’s been largely looked down upon as one of the “lesser” films produced by the Emeryville bods, and isn’t exactly one of their bigger earners. Unless you take into account the merchandising, which has spawned an empire all its own. So, naturally, there’s a sequel revving its engine up for release next year and now, according to Movieline, a direct-to-video spin off called Planes.

Yes, for a team that once stood firmly against sequels , there really does seem to have been an attitude shift in recent years, with sequels to some of the big hits, like Monsters Inc in production and with a whole company spin-off (the new Canadian arm of the studio), we’re guessing this could be just the start.

But before leaping to any conclusions, let’s have a little faith in the people behind Buzz, Woody and Lightning McQueen, shall we? Toy Story 3 was excellent and no one should count them out as money-grabbing factory-film types just yet.

More Hulk Casting News: Ed Norton Out...Mark Ruffalo In?

We're guessing that Marvel Studios was hoping to announce this at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 24th, but deadline is reporting that Mark Ruffalo is in “late-stage talks” to replace Edward Norton as The Incredible Hulk.

The 42-year actor would be the third actor to go green for the role, after Norton and Eric Bana gave it a shot in two previous films. Neither was the blockbuster hit hoped for by producers. This time, at least, The Hulk will not have to carry a movie on his own. Ruffalo would play the part in the superhero ensemble flick The Avengers, set to be released in 2012.

Ruffalo is currently starring in new indie film The Kids Are All Right.

Bye-Bye Blockbuster

Blockbuster was once the mecca of rentals. While indie metropolitan stores may have always reigned supreme in terms of stock and scope, Blockbuster was the "it" locale for the rest of the country. It wasn't so long ago when stores would be packed on a Friday evening as people rushed to grab the new releases, and shelves stocked sure-to-be-there bets -- films that weren't guaranteed because no one was going to the store, but because they'd have huge piles of discs.
Now Blockbuster is a movie ghost town. After the onslaught of Netflix and Redbox, the end has been near for a while. The company has managed to hold on, just barely, but financial types are now expecting the end to come in 2011.

Blockbuster is near the top of 24/7 Wall St's new list of brands expected to disappear by the end of 2011. The company is currently considering Chapter 11, and it lost another $65 million last quarter. 6,000 stores are still left, but 24/7 believes that the only life left in the company is the kiosk/delivery rental methods. "Its brick-and-mortar business is dead."

It just goes to show you how much of any movie business relies on the casual moviegoer, not the eager-to-watch-everything cinephile. I always, and wrongly, thought that video stores would stay around for the increased options, the older films, and the immediacy the system awarded. You wouldn't have to plan a night in with friends, they could just head to the local store with you and decide between the old and the new.

With streaming, members were offered the immediacy mail could never provide, popping the last piece into Blockbuster's death puzzle. Netflix-free Canada might have to wait for Blockbuster's death knell to prod zip.ca to rival the 'flix in title options and streaming, but chances are that in the U.S., most folks won't really feel the impact of Blockbuster's death. All the company can hope for is a nice influx of buyers when all of their dvds hit the 5-for-$20 bin.

'Ratatouille' And Other Pixar Movies Prepping For 3D Re-Release

Pixar has already returned to the money-regurgitating well twice now with 3D re-releases of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which returned to theaters simultaneously last year. Now it appears as though other entries from Pixar’s library may be getting a similar treatment, according to a recent interview with the studio’s stereoscopic (3D) imaging supervisor, Bob Whitehill.
Ratatouille is the current contender being taken into consideration, and apparently director Brad Bird is open to the process.

"Ratatouille is one that we’re exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframings. If a character’s reaching forward and a pinky goes off screen, we’ll adjust the camera and the character a little bit to have the hand on. So that said, if the director’s open to minor modifications on a library title then that’s wonderful and we’re really excited about doing that."

The Toy Story & Toy Story 2 3D double-feature earned them a respectable $30 million, but that was before other studios had taken to declaring their entire film line-up be 3D releases. Would audiences really be as eager now to shell out $10-$15 bucks for a single, more recent Pixar title?

Another Show Is Removed From Comic-Con's Schedule

Another one bites the dust. Terra Nova, the upcoming Fox sci-fi show produced by Steven Spielberg, has been removed from the schedule for San Diego Comic Con.  It’s the second panel to suffer this fate after Piranha 3D, which was removed because the footage was deemed too violent.

No official reason was given for the removal but sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the main reason is there isn’t enough footage ready to warrant the panel. That’s the same reason obvious shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones and Torchwood don’t have representation this year.

Terra Nova, which is set to be a mid-season replacement in 2011, stars Jason O’Mara (the life on mars remake) as a man whose family lives on a dying earth where people are traveling back in time to survive and end up surrounded by dinosaurs. Think Stargate meets Jurassic Park and an inconvenient truth.

Batman is returning, but he won’t have the Joker to contend with next time.Director Christopher Nolan says he will not bring back the Joker, the villain played so brilliantly in The Dark Knight by Heath Ledger. The role earned him an Academy Award a year after his death.

In an interview, Nolan would not disclose what villain or villains might take on Batman in the next film, due out July 20, 2012. But the director says that Ledger for him was the definitive Joker and that it would not feel appropriate to bring back the character.

The next film will be the third in the current Warner Bros. incarnation of the Batman franchise, which stars Christian Bale as the vigilante superhero.

What villain would you like to see in the next batman film and who would you want to play him or her?

American Splendor's Harvey Pekar Passes Away

In sad, but not entirely unexpected news, Harvey Pekar, best known for his long-running American Splendor underground/indie comic book series, passed away early this morning at his home in Ohio. Pekar had been suffering from multiple illnesses, including prostrate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression. He was 70.

Pekar began
American Splendor in 1976 to document non-superheroic, everyday life, including his own, in his native hometown, Cleveland, Ohio, often with a caustic, acerbic, self-deprecatory wit. Pekar's work attracted some of the most-respected and well-known names in underground and mainstream comics. American Splendor's last issue appeared in 2008.

In 2003, Pekar attracted new readers and critical acclaim with the release of a biopic called, aptly enough,
American Splendor. Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the biopic starred Paul Giamatti as Pekar, Hope Davis as his wife Joyce Brabner, and Pekar and Brabner as themselves, commenting on their lives, their lives-as-a-movie, and, of course, comic books. American Splendor won the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film at that year's Sundance Film Festival, Best Adapted Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America, and a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Pekar went on to document the experience in American Splendor: Our Movie Year.

Norton's Agent Responds To Announcement To Recast Hulk

In what is turning out to be a dramatic parting of the ways, Edward Norton's agent has issued a statement to HitFix after Marvel Studios confirmed the Academy Award nominee would not return as Bruce Banner in The Avengers.

Marvel Studios is going in a new direction for the Hulk, replacing Norton who starred in 2008's The Incredible Hulk as a scientist who transforms into a monstrous, but heroic Hulk after a massive exposure to gamma radiation. Marvel indicated their decision was not about salary, as sources had indicated originally, but "instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members."

Brian Swardstrom of WME responds with the following:

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light.  Here are the facts:  two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers.  He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention.  When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project.  Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast.  Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith.  This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part.  This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments.  Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his.  Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory.  Mr. Norton's talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans.

I can't really argue with anything Swardstrom said in the statement above. Ed Norton would be great in The Avengers.

Monday Morning Movie Round-Up

Despicable Me eclipses The Twilight Saga, as the latest movie in the series has lost the top spot at the box office. Eclipse came in second with Universal's Despicable Me now number one with an impressive $60.1 million in its three-day opening.

The 3D animated feature was the big news this weekend as it exceeded expectations and had the biggest opening for an original animated movie, not made by Pixar or DreamWorks. Eclipse did manage to rake in another $33.4 million, totaling the film's cumulative box office numbers to almost $250 million in the first 11 days of release.

Fox's Predators came in third with 25.3 million and Disney's Toy Story 3 came in fourth bringing in another 22 million in its fourth week at the box office. And rounding out the top five is The Last Airbender, from director M. Night Shyamalan. The movie based on the television cartoon of the same name earned 17.1 million dollars.

Did you go see a movie this weekend?

No Edward Norton As Hulk in The Avengers Movie

Edward Norton will not be reprising his role as Dr. Bruce Banner, reports hitfix, who say that Marvel Studios plan to cast an unknown in the part.

The report theorizes that a deal could not be made, despite Edward Norton wanting to join the ensemble cast that will include Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans as Captain America.

The source says Norton and director Joss Whedon have met to discuss the film and hit it off. Apparently both had reported their enthusiasm to Marvel afterward with Norton even clearing his schedule. It would be truly disappointing if this turns out to be true. Edward Norton would be great along side Downey Jr and Samuel L Jackson.

UPDATE: MARVEL CONFIRMS THEY WILL REPLACE NORTON AS THE HULK

In a statement sent in direct response to the story above, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige had this to say from the set of "Captain America" in London,

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."
